LORENZ wireless water meters in a splash of water

Design for Remanufacturing –
engineered for the future

Our digital wireless water meter (DFZ) was developed from the very beginning according to the principle of “Design for Remanufacturing”. It is our concept that has won multiple awards – most notably the 2020 Innovation Award for Climate and Environment of the German Federal Environment Ministry. All components are easy to separate and optimised for remanufacturing. This keeps valuable raw materials such as brass, high-grade plastics and electronic modules directly in a closed loop.

The benefit to the environment is enormous. While manufacturing a new Lorenz water meter causes an average of 3.67 kg CO2 eq., precise remanufacturing at Lorenz requires only 0.18 kg CO2 eq.

A direct comparison:
new product vs. remanufacturing

3.67 kg CO2 eq.* New product
0.18 kg CO2 eq.* LORENZ remanufacturing

95% CO2 savings

*Production per meter

How do we achieve this?

At Lorenz, water meters are not disposable products – reuse is what sets us apart from mere recycling. By consistently applying the principle of the circular economy, we close material cycles without gaps:

  • 6 years of worry-free use: At the end of the statutory service life (the 6-year calibration period), we take the meters back from our customers in full.
  • Design for Remanufacturing: The digital wireless water meter is so modular that all assemblies and components can be dismantled, cleaned and remanufactured with great efficiency.
  • Increased resilience: Through take-back and remanufacturing

Our green energy mix

For a healthy future

Energy self-sufficiency & resource
conservation at our Schelklingen site

We manufacture our precision measuring technology where we live – value is created almost entirely in Germany, with a minimal ecological footprint. Our production sets new sustainability standards for the industry:

Sun, plug and leaf – symbols of the green energy mix
  • Sun & wind on site:

Our own green electricity from large-scale photovoltaic systems and two company-owned wind turbines right on the premises.

  • Second-life battery storage:

A battery storage system made from used car batteries holds surplus energy for production phases with little sun or wind.

  • Climate-neutral heat:

Waste heat from a nearby biogas plant, with peak loads covered by a log boiler fired with wood from regional, sustainable forestry.

  • Forward-looking water management:

From 2027, our rainwater storage will save 5,500 kg CO2 eq. every year. The collected rainwater is available free of charge to the local population and to agriculture.

Our science-based
climate targets (SBTi)

As an official partner of the Climate Alliance of the State of Baden-Württemberg, Lorenz has committed itself to ambitious climate protection targets.

We follow the 1.5 °C pathway of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):

As the mechanical water meters, which are kept entirely in the cycle, are increasingly being replaced by wireless water meters, some 150,000 wireless water meters were already remanufactured in 2025. This saving corresponds to a reduction of our carbon footprint by more than 500,000 kg – together with the recycling of brass chips from production and of returned third-party meters, more than 1 million kg CO2 eq. was saved.

Our progress
and targets in figures.

Area (reduction relative to 2018) Status 2025 Target 2030
Scope 1 & 2 (direct emissions & energy) −92% −95%
Scope 3 (specific emissions per water meter) −10% −30%
